Bentomat solution for Lawley Village

McAuliffe have provided an innovative solution to surface water runoff for the ongoing development works at the Lawley Village site in Telford.  The option was provided as a cost effective alternative to a puddle clay lining which removed the need for importing of quarried materials.

As part of the on site attenuation a total of three balancing ponds have been constructed by McAuliffe.  The largest pond was constructed with a bentomat layer to provide an impermeable lining to prevent infiltration of the collected surface water into the underlying mine workings.

The bentomat lining contains clay like granules that swell up to twenty times their original size once wet, forming a “glue like” substance that prevents infiltration through to the soils beneath, which were particularly sensitive due to historic mine workings.  The lining does not require any specialist heat welding like a traditional polymer liner and is self sealing, even if punctured the bentonite swells to plug the gaps reinstating the impermeable barrier.

Guy Scott Project Director commenting for the developer on this phase of works said, "McAuliffe have delivered an excellent finished product with a fit for purpose development platform for Phase 3 and 4 of the project taking on difficult logistical challenges along the way".
