Remediation Strategy:
Miller Homes, Manchester

Challenge

Miller Homes tasked McAuliffe with designing and delivering a remediation strategy to treat extensive TCE-contaminated soil and groundwater. This would unlock the long-derelict site – which sat on a main arterial route into Manchester City Centre – for development of over 260 new homes.

Solution

Our technical team conducted extensive site investigations, revising the DQRA & agreeing new remediation target values. Impacted soil was treated by stabilisation to a 130kpa soil-bearing capacity to support the piling rig, & we used our UK-exclusive patented substrate, ABC®+, to treat impacted groundwater. Demolition & earthworks ran concurrent to remediation, ensuring phased release of the site.

Results

Our approach saved our client 20 weeks off its original programme, reusing 99.7% of material onsite, saving 10,000 tonnes of material from landfill, and efficiently treating chlorinated solvents to bring Miller’s new homes to market faster. The project was completed with zero injuries or incidents.

Award-winning application of remediation technologies

McAuliffe won Best Application of Remediation Technologies at the Brownfield Awards 2020 for this project, which recognised our dual-action approach to treating 4,300m3 of TCE-impacted soils & a >1acre TCE-impacted groundwater plume.

Our approach included the first use of our exclusive patented substrate, Anaerobic BioChem Plus (ABC®+), in the UK. ABC®+, which is distributed by Carus Corporation in Europe, provides a more rapid reduction in chlorinated solvents versus other slow release methods, allowing for a reduced monitoring period post treatment.

We were impressed with the level of McAuliffe’s expertise, particularly when it came to liaising with the regulator. We selected McAuliffe on the basis they could do all the works in house, using their knowledge to make significant cost and time savings, while ensuring full regulatory compliance and a high level of sustainability.
