Remediation & enabling works:
HS2, Birmingham

Challenge

McAuliffe was contracted to carry out extensive remediation, enabling works and archaeological support on this high-profile site, which sits at the heart of the High Speed 2 line. Our programme of works was designed to deal with all contamination issues and create a suitable development platform for the new Curzon Street Station.

Solution

Our team worked closely with the client, designers and fellow subcontractors throughout this project, value-engineering the most effective solutions to issues in the ground. We designed practical methodologies, and helped archaeologists uncover what’s believed to be the world’s first railway roundhouse. Throughout the project, our fleet of intelligent plant tracked all treatment/excavation depths and materials movements in real-time for verification.

Results

The project was completed efficiently, thanks to our concurrent programme of works. During the works at Curzon Street, we won LMJV’s Golden Newt Award for sustainable working practices, as well as achieving LMJV ‘What Good Looks Like’ status. McAuliffe also provided multiple apprenticeships and supported WMCA’s construction gateway programme, helping to train a recruit who was previously homeless.

Sustainability and community engagement

Providing skills, education and employment opportunities was a focus on this project. As well as creating engineering and plant operator apprenticeships for local talent, our team hired a graduate of WMCA’s Construction Gateway programme, who was previously homeless. As an employee on Curzon Street, he gained experience in a broad range of site duties, as well as developing plant operation skills.

To help raise awareness of work opportunities for Black Country SMEs on the project, we hosted HS2 and WMCA’s first and only Supply Chain Summit from our Wolverhampton HQ.

Chris Cassell and the McAuliffe team have done an unbelievable job on raising standards on site over recent months, and should be really proud of what they have achieved.
McAuliffe’s collaboration with other contractors working on the project is inspirational with them always willing to help maintain the high standards expected working on the HS2 project.
